A bettor profited close to $500,000 on the ouster of Nicolás Maduro shortly prior to it was made public, sparking debate about whether someone profited from non-public details of American actions.

Market Movement in Predictions

Predictions made on the forecasting site, a crypto-powered platform, that the Venezuelan president would be out of power by the end of January rose in the period preceding former President Trump announced on the weekend that the Venezuelan leader had been apprehended.

A particular user, which joined the platform last month and made four bets, all on Venezuela, profited a total of $nearly half a million from a modest bet of $32,537.

Who placed the bet is a mystery. This unidentified trader had only a blockchain identifier for identification.

Odds Fluctuate Before Public Statement

Platform data shows that participants assessed the probability of a political change at just a low 6.5 percent in the afternoon of Friday, January 2nd.

Yet these probabilities had climbed to eleven percent by late Friday night and skyrocketed in the early hours of Saturday, suggesting a sharp shift in betting activity right before the official statement was made.

"This specific wager has all the characteristics of a bet based on confidential knowledge," commented Dennis Kelleher.

A handful of other individuals also earned significant sums from bets on the same outcome.

Political Attention Grows

Elected officials are beginning to pay attention.

A bill put forward on Monday aims to prohibit public officials from participating on prediction markets if they have "material nonpublic information" related to a wager.

Market Background

Event-driven betting sites have become increasingly popular in the United States, with traders able to bet on everything from sports outcomes to politics.

Prediction markets encountered regulatory challenges under the previous administration. Yet it has found a more favorable environment during the Trump presidency.

Insider trading is against the law in the stock market, but there are fewer regulations in the event betting space.

An official representative for Kalshi said their site "explicitly prohibits trading on insider information of any form."
