"Any idea when you're chatting with Haim?" a message reads. "My request was to ask if I can become their extra sister."

There's just a single issue: The author likewise wants to be Haim's newest recruit. What's more, we are in plentiful company. Several high-profile supporters have openly coveted the honor.

One thing is obvious something is at play. Sisters Este, Danielle and Alana launched their musical journey playing gigs at small eateries with their parents. Today, they are multiple Grammy nominees.

Similar to the greatest bands, they're a tight-knit gang. Their music videos frequently depict them marching in sync down the streets of Los Angeles. During performances, they play with such pure joy you can't help but think, "I wish to be a piece of that, too."

"How often on tour that young girls told us and said, 'Seeing you perform, I bought a guitar'," says Alana, the most junior of the sisters. "That's the ultimate compliment. That's an award in itself. We've done our job if we can inspire people to start a band."

"And thus everyone are welcome to be the fourth part of the family."

Historic Milestone

The band are connecting from home, where they're resting up after an major tour in for their fourth album, I Quit.

They're currently processing the news it's been nominated for Best Rock Album at the Grammy Awards – with Haim the pioneering all-female band ever in consideration for the award.

"I watch the announcements every year, so it sort of feels like an out-of-body experience when your name is read out," notes Alana. "I had to call my sisters to say, 'Did we just hear this correctly or am I imagining things'?"

The importance of the accolade is deeply felt by the trio.

"We deliberately set out to make a rock album this time, so it's a significant step," adds Alana. "However we're just thankful for the women that came before us."

Heartbreak and Candor

The album emerged from a time of emotional upheaval. All three sisters ended up single, and the music inhabits that strange in-between place where you're relieved to be free, but not quite ready to let go.

The themes follow departures and partings. The sisters want love, but not the relationships they've experienced. You can hear them figuring out in real life who they aspire to be.

"I adore summary, yes," says Danielle. "I Quit is essentially a personal statement. You have to actively work on blocking the outside opinions and saying, 'It doesn't matter to me what people think'."

Refinement of Music

That recent resilience required a fresh approach – more organic and immediate than anything the band had done before.

For Danielle, who co-produced the album, that began with the drums.

"Percussion is such a specific thing, and I focus so intensely about it," she states.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the title of our book," quips Alana. "Our motto is, our albums won't commence until we find the ideal drum sound."

Stories and Collective Laughter

The band's honesty shaped the album's rollout, where the sisters revealed some of their romantic misadventures.

One man broke up with Este over a health consideration. Alana shared a story of flying to celebrate New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a high five at midnight.

"When you're going through these setbacks, you just feel like there's only darkness," says Alana. "Thus to be able to find humor in those stories and have them tell you more outrageous stories, it's so amazing."

A Confident Path

One can easily sense a shift in the band. Now, Haim are more assured of their standing in the music world.

They're festival headliners, with successful albums and an worldwide fan base.

But the band will consistently be their top priority.

"Me and my siblings have been performing since I was little," concludes Alana. "There is no alternative that we were meant to do. And I'm really grateful we've gotten here and we're still making music."
