Fed Cuts Borrowing Costs for Second Instance This Calendar Year During Financial Instability

The US central bank reduced interest rates on Wednesday, representing the second rate cut this year during financial volatility stemming from the federal government shutdown and tariff policies.

Decision Comes at Unprecedented Moment for Central Bank

The decision to cut the benchmark interest rate by a 0.25% to a span of 3.75% to 4% comes at an unprecedented moment for the Fed. The institution has been under immense pressure to cut rates despite persistent inflation.

Central Bank Announcement Highlights Labor Market Changes

In a statement, the Fed said that the unemployment rate had gone up but stays modest. “Job gains have decelerated,” the statement reads. “Inflation has moved up and stays somewhat elevated.”

Government Shutdown Complicates Fed’s Job

The ongoing federal government shutdown, now one of the longest in US history, has also hindered the Fed’s job. Collection of key financial statistics has been indefinitely halted as staff at the BLS are on leave during the closure.

Information Shortage Affects Monetary Moves

The Fed usually analyzes BLS data to assess employment trends, including the number of employment gains created to the market and the current unemployment rate. The most recent employment data was published in the beginning of last month, before the shutdown, and gave a relatively bleak snapshot of the employment scene in the previous month.

The figure of jobs added to the economy in the summer month was lower by over 100k since the spring, and joblessness rose to 4.3% – the peak since three years ago.

Private Data Show Continued Slowdown

Though the bureau was set to release September’s job market report in the start of last month, it halted its publication once the closure started. Employment data company a leading payroll processor indicated earlier this month that the business segment eliminated 32,000 positions in September, a indication that the job market is still decelerating.

“Supply as well as demand for labor has fallen quite sharply,” Fed chair the Fed chairman stated earlier this month, which he had earlier attributed comes from trade and immigration measures.

Price Data Shows Gradual Rise

Though BLS’s employment data has been suspended, the bureau still issued its inflation report for last month that indicated that prices are rising, albeit gradually. Prices increased three percent over the past twelve months, the peak since the start of the year. In spring, the annual inflation rate was 2.3%, the lowest it has been since three years ago. The Fed’s target inflation rate is two percent.
