France to begin stopping small boats in Channel following British demands
French officials have consented to begin stopping small boats in the Channel, following an extended period of insistence from the UK.
The change in policy follows the British leader wrote to the French leader asking him to back the plan and stating there currently "have no effective deterrent" in the Channel.
French security forces have been authorized to intercept the small boats at sea, but only before they've collected their migrants, according to authoritative statements.
French police have infrequently acted to stop the overcrowded boats departing from the coastline because it is considered excessively high a risk to both officers and individuals.
"It is crucial that we deploy these methods this month... We have zero effective deterrent in the Channel."
Currently, a French naval police representative says personnel will begin taking action at sea, with the aim of protecting lives.
Significantly, the official ruled out the use of entanglement devices to intercept boats, which had previously been suggested as a possible method to disable the propellers of the boats.
This determination to intervene at all is a major advancement, following a brief change towards a stricter approach this summer, which dropped off when the former Interior Minister departed from office.
That was highlighted in July, preceding a meeting between the UK leader and French president, when French police were witnessed walking into the sea to damage the sides of a vessel.
Now French officials will again be permitted to intercept boats prior to they collect migrant passengers from the coastal areas of France's north coast, however it's uncertain how the small boats will be prevented.
Powerful gusts are currently delaying the start of intervention operations and the people-smuggling networks will be seeking ways to adapt to avoid detection, as they have frequently done in the previous instances.
The Home Office and the Prime Minister's office have been contacted for response.
