Trump's Woke Warning Misses Europe's Real Threat: Economic Stagnation.

Donald Trump's national security strategy offers a misguided assessment of the European Union. It claims that open-border policies and what it terms "progressive" agendas represent an grave risk to European civilization. However, this perspective is based on a fundamental misinterpretation of the situation. The true danger facing Europe is not societal but technological and economic backwardness.

The Stark Economic Divide Between the US and Europe

The data reveal a stark contrast. Between 2008 and 2023, US GDP surged by 87%, compared to a paltry 13.5% increase for the EU. During this period, European income per person dropped from 76.5% to just half of the American figure. Remarkably, even the poorest US state now boasts a greater average income than several leading European economies like France and Italy.

Currently, roughly 50% of the global top fifty tech companies are US-based, while a mere four are from Europe.

The Innovation Deficit: The Core Problem

The growing economic gap is driven by superior productivity growth in the United States, fueled by technological innovation and higher total factor productivity. The scene of global tech dominance is decidedly American. In the last five decades, hundreds of American startups have grown into enterprises valued at over ten billion dollars, versus just 14 in the European continent.

This disparity prompts a pressing issue: As the competition for tomorrow's sectors like semiconductors, AI, and quantum computing, where does Europe stand? Most analysts agree it is largely a two-horse race involving the US and China, with Europe starting at a significant disadvantage.

Underlying Factors of Europe's Technological Lag

Several key factors account for this technological divide.

  • Financing Ecosystem: The US boasts a far deeper and more dynamic system for funding startups. Europe has yet to establish a true capital markets union, which limits the growth potential of emerging companies.
  • Regulatory Fragmentation: Complex and divided rules hinder European business. A American entrepreneur can introduce a product under one regulatory framework to access a consumer base of hundreds of millions. The EU, despite a larger population size, is divided among twenty-seven separate systems, creating significant market obstacles.
  • Mindset Differences: Views on risk-taking differ sharply. In some EU nations, business failure was historically viewed with stigma, whereas in the US, it is often seen as a valuable lesson.
  • Military Investment: The United States enjoys a tightly woven academic-military-industrial complex. Europe's long-term lack of spending in defense has eroded its capacity for breakthrough innovation.

A Path Forward: Reasons for Hopefulness

In spite of these challenges, there are reasons for hope. Policymakers are growing more conscious of the severe threat and have started to advance substantial change. Notable analyses on EU competitiveness and the single market point to the necessity of sweeping reforms.

With the right incentives and regulatory reforms, these assets could support far greater degrees of business-led breakthroughs.

Europe retains significant advantages: high-quality human capital, top-tier education systems, and premier labs. Coupled with a vast domestic consumer base and substantial household savings, these foundations could unleash a surge of venture creation.

Crucially, even if the EU does not take the lead in creating cutting-edge technologies, it can still significantly increase economic output by adopting and adapting innovations from other regions.

An Inflection Point

The European Union now stands at a critical crossroads. As the saying goes, decline often happens "slowly, then all at once". To date, the continent's slide in innovation has been gradual. But, without decisive action to address its deep-seated problems, today's slow erosion could turn into a sudden and irreversible loss of global economic relevance.
