Wimbledon Adopts Video Challenge Technology in 2025.

The Championships tennis court with replay technology

The tournament joins the US and Aussie Opens in employing video review technology.

Replay systems will make its debut at The Championships this year.

Athletes will gain the option to question certain decisions from the chair umpire, mirroring the protocol already in use at both the American Grand Slam and the Australian Open.

This technology will be operational on the main stadium and Court One for the duration of the tournament and on the remaining show courts when they are hosting singles contests.

This development arrives only a season following the AELTC implemented electronic line calling, which terminated the longstanding role of line judges.

Scope of Challenges

Competitors will not be permitted to challenge the accuracy of the electronic line calling, but they can request the umpire to review other situations, including:

  • If a tennis ball has bounced twice.
  • Whether a shot touched an rival's racket or body on the way past.
  • Possible hindrance at the conclusion of a point.

Importantly, there is no cap on the number of reviews a player can ask for.

A Recent Example

An illustrative incident occurred in Indian Wells recently, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the review system against Jack Draper.

Draper conceded it was a tough call for the umpire, but thought his rival had "used the regulations quite well."

The umpire viewed a video and determined the player was responsible for interference, granting the rally to Medvedev.

Growing Trend

This technology aren't exclusive to Grand Slams. The system has been in use at the US Open for two years and the Aussie Open this year.

Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour will have the system implemented at every one of its tournaments.

Other Changes

A further innovation at The Championships 2025 will be the introduction of visual indicators on displays to support the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.

This addresses situations where the crowd have occasionally been unsure if a shot was out or in.

Finally, with exactly 100 days to go until the beginning of the Championships, the AELTC have further revealed an increase in daily attendance at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
